What isolated presidents can teach us

Given increasing voter and party differences, US presidents must govern in the face of more opposition, further evidenced by declining approval ratings.

Jordan Cash, assistant professor in Michigan State University’s James Madison College, has written a new book, The Isolated Presidency (Oxford University Press, 2023) that explores presidents who came into office without being elected and who then lacked strong support.

Here, he discusses how the Constitution shapes the presidency, and answers questions surrounding the role of the US presidency today:
