A new book outlines how the FBI waged a decades-long harassment campaign against prominent African American writers and activists.

In F.B. Eyes: How J. Edgar Hoover’s Ghostreaders Framed African American Literature (Princeton, 2015), William J. Maxwell, a professor of English at Washington University in St. Louis, describes the “dirty tricks” the agency used to keep tabs on Black artists and how they continued to express themselves.
